Christmas Bokeh portraits. A how to!

I thought I would just write a quick little explanation of how I do Christmas bokeh images. Ive had a few messages and emails since I posted my latest attempts this weekend so here I Ill just have a go and try and explain it.

I was using my SB600 on camera Bouncing off the window to my left.

Okay so In camera Raw select the image and I do Basic adjustmunts. I increased the exposure slightly and fixed white balance. I always Increase Clarity and vibrance about 30 as well. Im not worried about the red blown areas. I want them to be bright!

After I opened the image in Photoshop the first thing I did was duplicate the layer. Then I used the paint brush and eye dropper tool to blend the back drop to the floor. I also painted over any wires that were visible.I merge them together. Duplicate layer again set to screen and decrease opacity till about 40%

Merged them together. Duplicated layer again and cloned in the lights into the blank areas. Merge.

Duplicated layer again, set to soft light, decreased to about 55% and merge again!

If you prefer clean simple edits you could call it good here and be done or do whatever YOU normally do to your images.

I however have a little obsession with textures so I added 3 of my favorite here from Jessica Drossin. So I placed my textures and set them to overlay and adjusted opacity till I liked what I saw! Then I erased the textures off of the dog, if this was a person I would of erased off of the skin. Merge again.

My favorite action in the whole world is Just Love by the wonderful Sarah Cornish at My four hens photography. I use it on 99.9% of my images. So I ran it here and adjusted the light layers inside and then set it to 40%. I flattened and that was it.

I just had to take advantage of all the warm sunny evenings after spending 3 years in England! I was driving. Driving along the long long straight roads here listening to the radio. When some words from the song that was playing just jumped out at me and brought tears to my eyes.

Now Imagine sweet little childrens voices singing that!

I knew what I had to do. I wanted to do something for the familys of deployed military members this holiday season but wanted it to be something the guys and girls over there could also enjoy and know that we are thinking of them and that they are missed terribly. I'm in communication with the local elementary school hoping we can get them to sing for us for the background music. All family's that are photographed will also be invited to sing. I want to get some images of your family and children with home made signs with holiday wishes on them, kids hugging on there daddy dolls and wives/girlfriends with photographs of their loved ones!

I hadn't tortured myself in a while by trying to get a picture of my kids! So we headed out to a local park one evening to change that! I really wanted to get a nice shot of my 9yr old and maybe one of all of them together. Any photographers reading this will understand how hard this can be! I can take other peoples kids pictures all day long and have ALLL the patience in the world with them but man, my kids drive me batty!
Anyways, I was happy with what we got and they were happier to go play in the playground as soon as we were done!

Hey there! Long time no talk ;)

We've been on a bit of an adventure our little family! we left Raf lakenheath and are now settled(somewhat!) at Cannon AFB, NM. So far its no where near as bad as everything you've heard! I actually kinda really like it here! While I enjoyed the little shooting break it got old real quick! My kids were tired of my camera and I was tired of fighting them! My fellow photogs will understand the pain of taking your own kids pictures! Of course all that extra time on my hands, meant time for lots of flickr and pinterest surfing! I love both sites and spend way to much time on them! They both have such an assortment of inspiration! But that only made me want to capture some awesome kids shots even more! Sooooooo.....

Sunday I held my first mini session day. I think it was a whole lot of fun! We had the kids come out with they're Halloween costumes and they got to take some candy home with them after wards. It was certainly a challenge to make sure each session was nt going to run into the next. I normally only schedule 1 or 2 sessions a day so as not to feel rushed, but i think it all went to plan. A new friend of mine recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Luckily he came before his daddy left for 6 months on deployment, and he got to spend a cherished couple of weeks with him. He was such a perfect baby, at 12 days old still soooo sleepy, yet did wake up for a little bit and was so content just looking around! I dont think I heard him cry the whole session! This year I have teamed up with Miller’s Professional Imaging to bring you this year’s Baby & Child Portrait Contest. And it couldn’t be any easier to enter! Simply book a portrait session with me and I’ll take care of the rest. All sessions must take place BEFORE June 15, 2010 in order to meet the submission deadline.
I'll choose my favorite photo from your session and submit it to the contest. There are four different portrait categories including: Color, Black & White/Sepia, Special Needs, and Humorous.

The online contest will consist of four different qualifying rounds and one final round. Each round will last for one month. Be sure to tell your friends and family about the contest so they can vote! Voting deadlines for each round are as follows:

•Round 1 (March): Vote on Entries – March 22 – 31.
•Round 2 (April): Vote on Entries – April 22 – 30.
•Round 3 (May): Vote on Entries – May 22 – 31.
•Round 4 (June): Vote on Entries – June 22 – 30.

For each qualifying round, the top five winners will be selected from the four categories and will receive a studio sample of their winning image. These winning portraits will be entered into the Final Round, which takes place during the month of July. The Final Round will be judged online by a panel of esteemed photographers. First, Second, and Third places, as well as two Honorable Mentions, will be announced for each category! Cash prizes for these winners include $2,000 for First, $1,000 for Second, $750 for Third, and $500 for each Honorable Mention. One portrait from the Final Round will also receive the highest of accolades — Grand Prize Winner. The cash prize will be $5,000 for this lucky winner! All cash prizes will be given to the families of the winning portraits.

Happy new year :) I totally neglegted my blog towards the end of last year, but im hoping to keep up withit this year. I am so excited for this year. I have so many fun things I want to try out so keep a look out Im sure I'll be offering freebie sessions. I was so busy over christmas that I was glad for the break but now Im back and raring to go but my husbands now gone so im really limited timewise at the moment.
